Odds and Ends

We’re less than a month away from the release of Bold Moves!! If you haven’t yet, you can preorder it for Kindle (it will also be in KU) and in paperback. The audiobook—read by Savannah Peachwood and Jeremy York—will be available at Audible and you can add it to your Goodreads shelves. There are additional preorder links at Books2Read.

I’ve started hearing from folks who’ve read it, and some of them were kind enough to say nice things about it. I was especially touched by these blurbs from Alicia Thompson and Jen Devon. With Love, From Cold World and Bend Toward the Sun are, bar none, some of my favorite romances of the last few years. I was just beyond excited that they read and enjoyed Bold Moves.

Plus, if you’re in the United States, you can enter a giveaway to win one of 100 copies of Bold Moves here. The number of folks who have a book marked “to read” is one of those things (along with preorder numbers) that publishers really pay attention to.

And finally, I went on the Book Besties podcast to talk about Bold Moves! You can listen here and watch on YouTube here. We talked about the book and my writing process and differentiating character voices and a million other things.

Odds and Ends

Firstly, Funny Guy—my friends-to-lovers romance featuring a chaos Muppet comedian realizing that he’s in love with his order Muppet BFF—is on sale for the month of July in North America only (sorry about that!). For just $1.99, this somewhat polarizing book can be yours. You can grab it at Amazon, and I hope you will.

Secondly, I have two items up for grabs in the Romancing the Vote auction, which opened TODAY and closes on July 5. Option A: you can bid on a signed ARC of Bad Reputation, and I’ll throw in a friendship bracelet that matches the cover. Or if you would prefer, Option B is a Backyard Chicken starter pack, which includes two guides on keeping chickens, plus a signed copy of Chick Magnet, and a 30-minute Zoom call with me. We can talk about chickens if you have them/are thinking about getting them, or we can talk books: seriously, ask me anything!

How would you like 2000+ FREE books? Yes, it’s that time again: Stuff Your eReader Day! Just visit RomanceBookworms.com and browse the amazing selection of books on offer. I skimmed the list, and I would particularly recommend that you check out Zara Keane, Carrie Lomax, Nicola Davidson, Asa Maria Bradley, Rachel Grant, Lucy Eden, Brighton Walsh, K.M. Jackson, Annika Martin, J.A. Rock, Ainsley Booth and Sadie Haller, Eve Pendle, Carrie Ann Ryan, Renee Dahlia, Kat Latham, Kate Meader, and Zoe York. And of course me.

If you haven’t read it, The One You Want, the first book in my contemporary political romance series, can be yours for zero pennies. It features a shy union lobbyist finding her voice while battling a pragmatic Senate staffer and falling for him in the process. If you’ve ever thought, “I want to read a romance that’s like The West Wing but with more steam,” then friends, this might be the one that you, ahem, want.

And two more podcasts that I recorded in the last year dropped and are available for your listening pleasure. I joined Elle Greco on Steam Scenes to talk about Chick Magnet. Elle and I both work in higher education, and so we ended up having a long conversation about the weaponization of taste in the academy, before she reads and we dissect a steamy moment with Will and Nic.

And I also went on Turn Me On (Spotify and Apple) to talk about Funny Guy. This is a fascinating convo because the hosts aren’t necessarily romance readers, so we talked about the goals of romance and romance in popular media.

Incoming Charity Auction!

The release week for Funny Guy has been so lovely–and the book has only been out for two days! You can grab your copy at Kindle/KU and Audible if you haven’t already.

I’m mostly here, however, to plug an upcoming romance charity event for a great cause: the Meet Cute Bookshop is putting together a Romance for Reproductive Justice Auction on 6/10 and 6/11.

I’ve donated a set of signed and personalized paperbacks of Funny Guy and Chick Magnet, and you can peruse the full auction here. There’s some AMAZING stuff that I will happily fight you for.

And while we wait, let me drop some links for things I’ve written and interviews and podcasts I’ve done to promote Funny Guy.

Chicken Roundup!

Friends, release week for Chick Magnet was BONKERS in the best way. I have done more promo for this book than for anything else I’ve written before. As a result, I wanted to put together a roundup post so that readers could find all those articles, podcasts, etc. in the future.

I’ll update this with more stuff as it drops–because not all of it is out in the world yet!–but here’s what I have so far. I am omitting reviews because I’ve been doing my best not to read those. ; )

And Funny Guy is now available on Netgalley if you’re a reviewer.

Funny Guy Cover Reveal!

Isn’t the cover for Funny Guy amazing? Well, the blurb is even better:

From the author of Chick Magnet comes a heartfelt friends-to-lovers story about what can happen when a funny guy and his childhood best friend are stuck together in a small New York City apartment.

Sam can’t escape the smash hit “Lost Boy” because, well, he is the lost boy. His pop-singer ex immortalized him in a song about his childish ways, and now his comedy career is on the line.

At least he still has Bree, his best friend and confidante. Bree has always been there for Sam, but she’s never revealed her biggest secret: she’s in love with him. To help herself move on, Bree applies for her dream job across the country―and doesn’t say a thing to Sam.

But as Sam tries to resuscitate his career, he turns to Bree for support―and maybe more. In the confines of her tiny apartment, they share a different dynamic. A charged dynamic. But she’s his friend. He can’t be falling for her.

Except he is.

Are his feelings for Bree just funny business? Or is their smoldering attraction the real deal?

It’ll release on May 16, 2023, but you can preorder it on Amazon and add it to your Goodreads shelves now.

And while I have your attention, I had a wonderful chat with Meg and Liz at the Make Out Already podcast about Chick Magnet. You can listen here, and you should because they’re charming.

Housekeeping Notes

  • The authors from He’s Come Undone will be day drinking with Molly O’Keefe on her Facebook page on Monday at 4 pm EST. We’re going to donate to the Black Mental Health Alliance for each comment, so come join us and sip on Unravelers, and we’ll give a lot of money to a good cause!
  • After my big podcasts post back in March (OMG, remember March?), I appeared on another episode of Shelf Love talking about myths about romance. Specifically, I make the argument that romances are well written. It’s an all-around great episode, and you should listen.
  • Lastly, I’m now unagented. This reflects nothing about my former agent and everything about how I’m a dumpster fire disguised as a writer. I just need to power-cycle everything about how I work and my career and get myself back on track, and I needed a fresh start to do it.

Buckets of Content for Your Quarantine

If you’re self-isolating like seemingly everyone else on earth, and you need some Emma Barry content to watch, read, or listen to, this is the post for you.

Screen Shot 2020-03-18 at 8.34.56 AM

  • I had a fabulous conversation with Andrea Martucci from the Shelf Love podcast about KJ Charles’s novel A Seditious Affair, which is one of my all-time favorite romances. You can–and should–listen to our conversation here. This episode is Not Safe for Work or, if you’re working from home, Not Safe for Delicate Ears. It is also not safe for my parents. (Dad, I mean it: don’t you dare press play!)
  • In the fall, Andrea had the amazing Kate Clayborn on, and they discussed A Midnight Feast. So you should totally listen to that episode too.
  • I just realized I never mentioned the Not Your Mother’s Romance Bookclub podcast did an entire episode on Earth Bound last year, and it was delightful. If you use Apple Podcasts, it’s here, and Google Podcast listeners can find it here.
  • But maybe video is more your thing. When my friend Olivia Dade was in the region over the summer, she and I taped a long conversation about writing romance, and you can watch it here. It’s basically the equivalent of hanging out with us for 90 minutes, and we are super entertaining. We also don’t mention Covid-19 a single time.
  • And if you’d like to hang out with Olivia and the wonderful Ruby Lang, you can do that too.
  • As a reminder, Olivia, Ruby, and I will join Cat Sebastian and Adriana Herrera in the He’s Come Undone anthology in May. I’ve been editing “Appassionata” in the last few days, and I’m so excited for everyone to read it soon.
  • Last but not least, if your TBR needs some more books from me, remember you can get my collection of short political romance Dispatches and my motorcycle club romance Free for free if you sign up for my newsletter. That’s 80K of happy endings, just for you!

That’s so much Emma Barry (and friends!) content–enough to brighten a day or two of quarantine at least. Stay safe and healthy, dear readers!

I’m a Disembodied Voice!

So if you’ve been thinking, “I’d like to hear Emma’s disembodied voice,” you’re in luck: I recently chatted with the lovely ladies at the Wicked Wallflowers Club about Earth Bound, Free Fall, how I spent years not writing my dissertation, politics, and phallic lobster Jell-O. Basically all the normal stuff.

You can listen to it here. But FYI, some of the language probably isn’t safe for work.

Odds and Ends

These are all related to the Sight Unseen release, but I’ve gathered them for your listening/reading pleasure:

  • Heroes and Heartbreakers had a post of Sight Unseen excerpts–and included polls about who wrote what. I’ve so enjoyed hearing all the guesses. Please let me know yours using the #SUWho hashtag.
  • All five us talked the book concept at Happily Ever After.
  • I had an essay at Smexy Books about identity, truth, and disguise.
  • I went on the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books podcast along with Sherry Thomas and Erin Satie to talk Sight Unseen. It was surreal as I listen to the podcast all. the. time.
